Chapter Sixteen

Vickie stewed in the desk chair in Alexis’ room while she twirled a branch of the fiber-optic Christmas tree. For all her powers, she felt paralyzed.

Her sister paced the room in indignation. “They have sunk to a new low. They’re setting you up as some kind of attacker so that they can get you in trouble?”

“I guess.” She shrugged. “It’s working too. I have nothing. I have no way to prove that I didn’t do it, and with Abby on her side, she has a witness, I guess. It’s two against one.”

Alexis sat on the edge of her bed and thought about how angry Megan made Vickie, and how she and her friends would not stop badgering her in their effort to humiliate and discredit her. For a moment, it almost made sense. “You didn’t do it, did you?”

She looked up from the Christmas tree, her expression offended. “Seriously?”

“I don’t know. Look, I don’t have any special powers and they drive me nuts too. I feel like, if I had the ability to beat her up and get away with it, I would try it. And they don’t even focus on me like they do on you. If they spent all their time trying to make my life miserable, maybe I’d take a shot.”

“Fine. But no, I didn’t do it. Why would I beat her up if Abby was standing right there?” She raised her palms in confusion. “Nothing about this makes sense. If Abby’s there, I have a witness. Beat her up in plain view and leave? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Alexis thought back to the times when the vampire had grown impulsive and lost control of her powers. “Yeah, but this kind of thing has happened before. You’ve acted without thinking and regretted it later.” She leaned forward and looked at her straight-on. “Is it possible you lost control for a moment?”

To that accusation, she laughed out loud. “There are two problems with that, Alexis. Number one, I have been impulsive with my powers, yes. But usually, when I act without thinking, it’s because someone is in danger. That’s when my instincts go haywire. Simply because I see someone I don’t like doesn’t mean I would lose my temper. Even if she pushed me around, I’m not scared of her physically. Number two—and maybe more importantly—what happens when I lose control of my powers? When I’ve been careless with my powers around this house, what usually happens next?”

Her sister smirked. She knew where she was going with this point. “You break stuff.”

Vickie raised a finger in protest. “No, not simply break stuff. I destroy things. Stuff gets set on fire. It gets bad…really bad. Now let’s say I’m impulsive and I’ve lost all self-control. Now, I attack Megan Fitz as a result. What would happen to her?”

“You’d kill her.”

“I’d kill her. If I punched her with the full force of my powers, my fist would probably come out the back of her skull.” Alexis grimaced at the thought.
